Could the next Alan Ayckbourn be living right here in Twyford? We're very excited to have unearthed some new scriptwriting talent after starting our very own Writing Group last summer. The aim was to offer the opportunity to drama group members interested in scriptwriting, but who hadn’t had the chance before, to try their hand at writing plays.
Led by our own Kathy Reid, whose most recent play Fight Them For The Beeches was enjoyed by large audiences when we staged the production last year, the Writing Group has looked at many different facets of script writing. These have included character, plot, script formatting and script editing, as well as reviewing high quality writing from established playwrights.
Writing Group members were then encouraged to write their own short plays which resulted in six quality scripts ranging from domestic comedy to biting social satire, ending with a preview of Twyford Drama’s next pantomime Buttons’ Dream, written by Emma Cianchi.
All six scripts were presented at a highly successful Writers’ Showcase social event we held for our members, family and friends in June. In addition to actually penning the pieces, the writers were responsible for casting and directing their own plays, which were very well received by our audience of sixty-odd spectators.
All five playwrights agreed that it was a magical feeling witnessing their individual scripts being brought to life by our own entertaining, talented actors, with Kathy Reid commenting: "All the plays were proven to be very good in performance and didn’t the actors do well!"
